Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis induced by acarbose

چکیده
Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis is a rare disorder with multiple submucosal or subserosal gas-filled cysts along the gastrointestinal wall. Pneumatosis intestinalis can be classified as either primary (idiopathic) or secondary. In the latter form, a causal relationship has been established with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, amyloidosis, infectious colitis, intestinal obstruction, ischemia, Crohn’s disease and iatrogenic conditions (drugs, surgery and endoscopy). Most commonly reported presentations include abdominal pain, subacute intestinal obstruction, diarrhea and bloody stools. Nevertheless, it is usually asymptomatic and found incidentally during investigation of unrelated symptoms. The authors report a case of pneumatosis intestinalis associated with the use of an oral antidiabetic acarbose (alpha-glucosidase inhibitor)

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis of the ascending colon related to acarbose treatment: a case report
INTRODUCTION Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis is characterized by the presence of multiple gas-filled cysts in the intestinal wall, the submucosa and/or subserosa of the intestine. The term pneumatosis cystoides coli is synonymous with pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis when the disorder is limited to the colon. It is a secondary finding caused by a wide variety of underlying gastrointestinal...
متن کاملA Rare Case of Benign Pneumatosis Intestinalis with Portal Venous Gas and Pneumoperitoneum Induced by Acarbose.
Alpha glucosidase inhibitors have been shown to be associated with pneumatosis intestinalis (PI) in recent reports. We herein report the case of a 73-year old man who received treatment with an alpha glucosidase inhibitor (acarbose) and presented with acute abdomen. A computed tomography scan demonstrated PI in addition to intrahepatic portal air and pneumoperitoneum. During exploratory laparot...
متن کاملImprovement of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis after steroid tapering in a patient with bronchial asthma: a case report
INTRODUCTION We report the case of a patient who was diagnosed as having pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis while being treated with prednisolone for bronchial asthma. Even before we had experienced a case of this, the relationship between pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis and prednisolone was unclear. In this case, pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis was improved with the reduction of predniso...
متن کاملSpontaneous benign pneumoperitoneum complicating scleroderma in the absence of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis.
We describe a 64 year old woman with a 3-year history of scleroderma who presented as an emergency with increasing painless abdominal distention. Radiological investigations revealed a pneumoperitoneum in the absence of either visceral perforation or pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis. This is only the fourth report of spontaneous benign pneumoperitoneum complicating scleroderma without pneumat...
